Cetona is perhaps the quintessential medieval hill town. Famous for its vineyards and ancient olive groves, Cetona is an ideal base for visiting the many charming villages of southern Tuscany and Umbria. Siena, Montalcino, Orvieto, and Assisi are just a short drive away. But it is not necessary to have a car here. Bus service links Cetona to the train station in the Etruscan town of Chiusi, worth visiting for its wonderful archaeological museum and charming cathedral. Travel by rail to Florence (1.5 hrs) or to Rome (1 hr). And if you want to do a little exploring by car, you can arrange a rental just for a day or two.

Cetona Tower is located in the quiet, pedestrian-only historic town center. The main piazza, with its small shops, cafés and trattorias, is steeply downhill from the townhouse. Cars can not maneuver the streets that wind uphill, but Doorways can make arrangements to have your luggage delivered to your door. Still, we do not recommend this property for anyone with a walking problem, or for families with young children.

This interesting apartment is built into the restoration of an old medieval tower and outfitted with unusual modern furnishings. Wall niches contain intriguing small sculptures and collections. The four floors of the apartment are connected by a beautiful travertine marble stairway. Amenities include TV, DVD player, stereo and high-speed Internet access.

On the ground floor, a spacious entrance hall leads to a circular sitting room, where a small window has a view of the countryside. A few steps down leads to the ancient tufa cellar and a terrace furnished with table and chairs for dining al fresco or enjoying the beautiful view. There is a small bathroom and a clothes washing machine just before the steps out to the terrace.

Circular stairs lead to the second floor, with a large eat-in kitchen with dishwasher and another sitting room with a fireplace. The floor above has two comfortable double bedrooms that share a bathroom with a shower/tub. Up a few more stairs to the fourth floor, with an air-conditioned mansard room with twin beds, a bathroom with a shower/tub, and a study with a series of windows all around, offering a panoramic view from north to south, over the traditional roofs of town and across the valley to the Umbrian hills. A small door leads to a terrace with a spectacular view.
