Villa la Chiusa is located in SS Annunziata, a pretty village
in the area surrounding Lucca, a lovely medieval town only two kilometers away.
Lucca is the birthplace of Puccini and hosts an annual festival featuring his
operas. The history of Lucca stretches back to classical times.The thick red brick
walls that surround the town were built during the 16th and 17th centuries to
defend against the Florentines and are still intact today. Within the walls, you
will find a cathedral, gardens, shops, and fine restaurants.
The adjacent
countryside features grand villas and wineries. Villa la Chiusa is within easy
reach of the beaches of Viareggio (30 km), Siena (2 hours), Portonfin0 (1.5 hours)
and the Cinqueterre and Carrara marble quarries (1 hour). Florence (1 hour) and
Pisa (1/2 hour) are accessible by car or by rail from Lucca. It is also possible
to rent bicycles; it is only ten minutes from the villa to the center of Lucca
on bicycle. There are local shops within 3 minutes of the villa and several very
fine restaurants nearby.
This villa has parts dating from the 15th
and 18th centuries. The owner's special draper's shop, specializing in traditional
fabrics, is located in another part of the villa. La Chiusa maintains its traditional
charm and character with terracotta tiled floors, frescoes and antiques. The owner
speaks English well and her guests are lucky to have her working in the small
shop next door. She can add immeasurably to your stay by recommending the best
places to go and by helping you find the way there. Villa la Chiusa is not formally
elegant; rather, it offers a comfortable décor and this atmosphere is enhanced
by the generosity and welcome of the good-natured owner.
The Italian
garden (3000 sq. m) is completely surrounded by century-old trees and ancient
walls. In the garden is a lovely in-ground pool. The villa is 600 sq. meters in
all with 200 sq. meters per floor.
On the ground floor
is an entrance hall, salon with baby grand piano, large living room with satellite
TV, large dining room, breakfast room, one double bedroom and a bathroom with
a shower. The large kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher and microwave. There
is an additional double bedroom with a small bathroom on this level, as well as
a separate laundry with washing machine/dryer. Villa La Chiusa is equipped with
high-speed DSL internet access.
The second floor has a
large living room, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Two are double bedrooms
with en-suite bathrooms; one has a Jacuzzi-shower. There is another double bedroom
with bathroom and a twin-bedded room.
The third floor
is private for the caretaker-house boy. He has his own kitchen and living quarters
and does all the cleaning of the house, gardening and pool maintenance and feeds
the three friendly dogs and cat that live on the property. Please do not consider
this villa if you have pet allergies or are frightened of dogs! The house boy's
days off are Sunday and Thursday afternoon. He can give help in knowing where
to shop, as he knows just where to buy each delicacy.
