Villa del Barbaro is located on the beautiful Villa Buonvisi estate,
with 344 acres of vineyards, olive trees and woods. The owners produce wine and
olive oil and offer guests incomparable hospitality. Although the setting seems
rural, the location is surprisingly convenient. There is a wonderful coffee bar
(and a bus stop) just across the street from the entrance to the property, and
there is a tiny village within walking distance. Lucca is just four kilometers
away. Tennis facilities and a small golf course are located nearby.
Lucca has an amiable small town atmosphere, with distinctive galleries and restaurants,
and splendid gardens and villas, many of which are open to the public for touring.
Ancient ramparts surround the town, making a pleasant walkway with wonderful views
(great for bicycling!). Pisa, Florence, Siena, Volterra are within easy driving
distance, as well as many other attractive Tuscan hilltowns. The beach is close
by (30 minutes) and walkers will want to hike the Cinqueterre and walk in the
mountains to the north of Lucca. Villa del Barbaro is a splendid
newly converted house dating from the 1700's. Built on three floors, the villa
offers spacious and comfortable living space for a sizeable group, with two living
rooms, a dining room and two kitchens. One kitchen has a traditional pizza oven.
A master pizza chef (pizzaiolo) can come to the villa to prepare an unforgettable
meal that just might be the highlight of your trip. Rooms
have traditional terracotta floors and exposed-beam ceilings and are elegantly
furnished with family antiques; mattresses are brand new! The
villa has five large bedrooms, three of which have en suite bathrooms. One of
the bedrooms has a king-sized bed, two have queen beds, one has twins and the
fifth has two full-sized beds that can accommodate two adults or four children.
Of the villas five bathrooms, two have Jacuzzi baths, two have standard bathtubs
and one (on the ground floor) has a shower. A solarium, sunny
patio, pretty garden and large private pool make the hours spent out of doors
as pleasant as those spent inside. Four mountain bikes are at guests' disposal,
and the owners generously offer use of their own "cabina" for one or more days
at a nearby private beach, where there are warm showers, changing rooms with lockers,
and a nice cafeteria. Villa del Barbaro is centrally air-conditioned,
with many modern amenities, including two dishwashers, a washing machine, satellite
TV, DVD, and stereo. A computer with high-speed Internet access is available for
guests to use. The owners live on the estate and will welcome you. This is a splendid
villa and an opportunity to meet an Italian family that speaks excellent English.
For large groups, Villa
Buonvisi and Villa
Cardinale, each with its own pool, are located on the same estate.
