Before the papacy was moved to Rome in the 14th century, Avignon was the great
city of the popes. The charming medieval village of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, just
across the Rhône, was the residence of cardinals. The village is known for its
local open-air market on Thursday and its antique market on Saturday. This location is ideal
for exploring the beautiful towns and villages of Provence. Avignon is just 10
minutes away. Aix-en-Provence, Arles, St-Rémy, the Pont du Gardes and the Luberon are all easy day trips.
The nearest TGV (fast train) to Paris (3 hrs) stops in Avignon, just fifteen minutes away.
