She wondered if I might take a look at it on my next trip to Italy. I was just leaving for Tuscany, so I was able to visit almost immediately...and there the adventure began. </p> <p class="style133">As I made my way through the brambles to the ancient, crumbling villa, I felt like I was stepping into a fairytale. The villa lay in ruins, but it was easy to see its marvelous potential. The location was fantastic, close enough to Cortona to be able to hike up into that beautiful hill town. And, perhaps best of all, this was the very villa that had been used in the filming of "Under the Tuscan Sun." I called my client from Italy and advised her to come right over and buy it — and she did! </p> <p class="style133">For the past four years, the family that owns Cline Cellars Winery in Sonoma, California, has been lovingly and painstakingly renovating the villa and its accompanying farmhouse. Whenever I have been passing through the area, I've stopped by to take photos and see how the work was progressing. Finally, in June, the renovation was finished, and the family went to Italy to spend the summer. ORVIETO: </strong>The city rises dramatically from almost vertical cliffs made of white volcanic tufa. Visit its famous Cathedral, explore the Rocca and St. Patrick’s Well (175 feet deep and 45 feet wide). Shop for ceramics, leather, dolls and woodcrafts. Have an unforgettable meal at Trattoria Dell’Orso, one of our favorite restaurants. There’s no menu, but everything is fresh and incredibly delicious, so whatever you order, it’s likely to be one of the best meals of your trip. (We love the farro soup!)<br> <strong><br> 2. WINE</strong>: Visit the fascinating History of Wine Museum of the Fondazione Lungarotti in Torgiano, which was set up by the well-known local wine-making family who also produce the Torgiano Rosso Riserva, one of two Umbrian wines to be awarded the prestigious DOCG appellation. The vineyards near Montefalco are known for their Sagrantrino and San Giovese wines.<br> <strong><br> 3. LAKE TRASIMENO:</strong> Only slightly smaller than Lake Como, Italy’s fourth largest lake is situated just inside Umbria, close to the border of Tuscany. Depart from Passignano for the 20-minute boat ride to Isola Maggiore to see lace being made and to visit the Lace Museum. <br> <strong><br> 4. NORCIA</strong>: History meets gastronomy in Norcia. The black truffle of Norcia is one of Italy’s most sought-after delicacies, celebrated in a festival each February. JAZZ</strong>: The Umbria Jazz Festival, held in Perugia every year during July, is one of the most important events of its kind in the world. Spoleto is home of the Festival Di Due Mondi, founded by composer Gian Carlo Menotti, with three weeks of music, theater and dance performances each June/July; its counterpart is held in Charleston, S.C. during May/June.<br> <strong><br> 7. CHOCOLATE: </strong>Perugina is synonymous with world-class chocolates; its most popular creation is Baci ('kisses' in Italian). Nestled in its silver and blue foil wrapping, each luscious, hazelnut-filled confection comes wrapped in a romantic multilingual love note. They are the star attraction at the Eurochocolate festival held each year in Perugia. Sandri, a famous café in Perugia, is Umbria's oldest confectioner's shop and was named as one of Newsweek's "World's Best Bars," with chocolates to die for. <br> <strong><br> 8. Our favorite Andalucian town is perched high on a mountain top, with narrow winding streets of white washed houses opening to spectacular views. Less than ten miles from the coast, Casares is a world away from the tourist bustle, offering authentic charm in a vibrant atmosphere. Climb to the 12th century fortress, explore the maze of tiny streets, or just relax at a sidewalk café and watch life unfold in <span class="style92">the square.</span></p> <p align="justify" class="style92"><strong>2. THE MOORISH LEGACY OF SEVILLE, CÓRDOBA & GRANADA:</strong> The Moors entered Spain in the 8th century, calling the region "Al Andalus." GIBRALTER: </strong>Few places on earth rival “The Rock” in terms of sheer physical presence. Towering over the Straights of Gibralter, this tiny British colony has a very unique identity, with an intertwining of cultures that goes back thousands of years. Explore prehistoric caves, follow the footsteps of Churchill through WWII tunnels excavated in the rock, or come to see its most popular attraction, the Barbary Apes that live at the top. Legend claims that should the macaques ever disappear, the British will leave Gibralter. </p> <p align="justify" class="style92"><strong>6. MOROCCO: </strong>Take the hydrofoil from Tarifa to Tangiers (45 minutes) to see the Cap Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. Shop for carpets, fabric and spices in the Souk (market). Or stay overnight to journey into the Rif mountains to the ancient town of Chefchaouen, where you can imagine life as it flourished 500 years ago in Moorish Spain.</p> <p align="justify" class="style92"><strong>7. GOLFER'S PARADISE: </strong>Andalucia has 61 golf courses, half of which are on the Costa del Sol. Málaga and Cadiz are the cities with the most golf courses per square mile in Europe. One of the most famous courses in Europe is the Valderrama Golf Club in the resort of Sotogrande, constructed to the designs of Robert Trent Jones. Close to Casares, the Finca Cortesín Golf Club hosted last year's Volvo World Match Play Championship and also offers five-star dining.</p> <p align="justify" class="style92"><strong>8. BIRD WATCHING:</strong> The Straits of Gibralter are a key point of passage on the migratory route between Europe and Africa. Northern migrations take place mid-February to June, while birds head south between late July and early November. Visit the nearby Sierra Crestellina Nature Park to see its resident colony of Griffon vultures. Andalucia has 13 resident raptor species.</p> <p align="justify" class="style92"><strong>9. FLAMENCO: </strong>Visit a “tablao” to experience flamenco, the soul of Andalucia. This genuine Spanish musical art combines singing, guitar accompaniment, and a powerful, passionate dance, with complex clapped rhythms.</p> <p align="justify" class="style92"><strong>10. FIESTAS:</strong> Some of Spain’s biggest festivals take place during April and May, starting with Holy Week (especially recommended in Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Málaga). Two weeks after Easter, Seville hosts its biggest party, La Feria de Abril. One of the highlights of May is the Horse Fair in Jerez. In Granada, May is time for the festival of the Cruces de Mayo, when large crosses adorn the churches and locals party in the streets. Also in May, Córdoba hosts the Fiesta de los Patios, a competition for the city’s most beautiful flowering patio, and the Feria de Córdoba. June brings the International Festival of Music and Dance in Granada, and July is the time for Córdoba's international guitar festival in the gardens of the Alcazar. August is a great time to visit Casares for the Feria, when the wh ole town is celebrating. I met Joseph and his family six years ago, on my first trip to Uganda. Joseph was an Italian missionary who dedicated 53 years of his life to improving Uganda through education. His widow, Juliet Rainer, worked for many years to support the development of Eastern Uganda and became one of the first women elected to the Ugandan constitutional convention and the national parliament.</p> <p align="left" class="style73"> Recently, I attended a board meeting in Kampala and was impressed by the members and mission. I admire their work and am confident that every dollar donated will have direct results. My daughter, Kim Burns Case, works as an educational consultant and is one of the founding board members.</p> <p align="left" class="style73">I thought that donating an Italian villa stay made perfect sense!
