Dear Friend,

Many of you have asked about European rentals in a small town or charming village where you can stay for a few weeks, or a few months — a place where you can live in the heart of a village and buy food at an open-air market, get to know the local butcher and baker and become a regular at your favorite neighborhood coffee bar. Some of you dream of a mini-sabbatical within walking distance of a train station, so you can explore without a car, while others want the best of both worlds — to stay in a village, but with parking, so you can choose to drive or not, depending on the day’s adventure.

Many of our village apartments are small gems, perfect for a couple, with additional sleeping space for occasional visitors. Others are spacious palaces and luxury villas. Some are right in the village center, while others are on the periphery of town, where walking into the village for lunch is an appealing option.

I don’t mean to neglect our marvelous city apartments in some of Europe’s most famous art cities — Rome, Florence, Milan, Paris, Barcelona and Madrid are all wonderful year round. But this newsletter focuses on more intimate locales that are perfect for long stays or winter rentals, where you can live as a native and become part of the local rhythm of village life.

Most of our prices are based on one-week stays, so be sure to ask for lower monthly rates if you are thinking of a longer, off-season rental.

Rent Villa Laura of “Under the Tuscan Sun”

ONCE UPON A TIME...

Four years ago, I received a call from a favorite customer to say she had been offered a villa that was for sale near Cortona. She wondered if I might take a look at it on my next trip to Italy. I was just leaving for Tuscany, so I was able to visit almost immediately...and there the adventure began.

As I made my way through the brambles to the ancient, crumbling villa, I felt like I was stepping into a fairytale. The villa lay in ruins, but it was easy to see its marvelous potential. The location was fantastic, close enough to Cortona to be able to hike up into that beautiful hill town. And, perhaps best of all, this was the very villa that had been used in the filming of "Under the Tuscan Sun." I called my client from Italy and advised her to come right over and buy it — and she did!

For the past four years, the family that owns Cline Cellars Winery in Sonoma, California, has been lovingly and painstakingly renovating the villa and its accompanying farmhouse. Whenever I have been passing through the area, I've stopped by to take photos and see how the work was progressing. Finally, in June, the renovation was finished, and the family went to Italy to spend the summer. I visited them in late June to see the final results, and walked around the property with the owners, stars in all of our eyes.

Villa Laura is still a fairytale, and now you can join the adventure. Villa Laura is now available to rent through Doorways.

You can win a chance for a free week's stay at lovely Villa Cardinale in Lucca, Tuscany, while supporting a very worthy cause in Africa — the Joseph Rainer Education Foundation.

Villa Cardinale is a beautiful five-bedroom, air-conditioned farmhouse in Tuscany, just 2.6 miles from Lucca, an hour from Florence, and half an hour from the beach.

The Joseph Rainer Education Foundation's mission is to create opportunities for the underprivileged young women of Uganda by empowering them with a quality education. The foundation supports St. Clare’s Girls’ High School, which was established by the late Joseph Rainer and his wife, Juliet in 1999.

The partnership between Doorways and the Joseph Rainer Foundation came very naturally. I met Joseph and his family six years ago, on my first trip to Uganda. Joseph was an Italian missionary who dedicated 53 years of his life to improving Uganda through education. His widow, Juliet Rainer, worked for many years to support the development of Eastern Uganda and became one of the first women elected to the Ugandan constitutional convention and the national parliament.

Recently, I attended a board meeting in Kampala and was impressed by the members and mission. I admire their work and am confident that every dollar donated will have direct results. My daughter, Kim Burns Case, works as an educational consultant and is one of the founding board members.

I thought that donating an Italian villa stay made perfect sense! Gianna, the owner of Villa Cardinale, agreed, and generously offered to partner with Doorways in offering the villa to benefit the Foundation.

Sardinia (Sardegna) is mix of contrasts woven together into a rich and colorful tapestry. Sandy beaches and elegant resorts on the northern Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) lure yachts and movie stars, who come for the beaches, dining, sailing, golfing (at the famous Pevero Golf Club), polo and designer shopping. Yet high in the mountains, simple shepherds still tend their sheep and make cheese in time-honored ways. The island offers the purest water and cleanest air in Italy, and its food and wine are healthy and delicious. The people, known for their longevity, revere their traditions with stunning festivals. The most famous is the Saint Estevio procession in May, when five thousand participants in traditional dress with decorated ox-drawn carts walk on rose petals through the streets of Cagliari. It is a sight you will never forget.

Sardinia is an island where every exploration uncovers layers of past civilizations, from the impressive and monumental "nuraghi" to ancient Phoenician sites like Nora, believed to be the first town in Sardinia.

How to Get There
Sardinia has three airports — Olbia on the northeast coast, Alghero on the northwest and Cagliari in the south. Flights from the UK take about 2 ½ hours or you can connect from many points in Europe or the Italian mainland. Or take Eurofly JFK to Rome and Meridiana (the Sardinian airline) to any of the three airports. Low-cost airlines serving Sardinia include EasyJet, Jet2.com, AlpiEagles, AirDolomiti and Ryanair. Alternatively, you can arrive by ferry from the Italian mainland, or from Marseilles.
Fun Fact
In the city of Alghero, a dialect of Catalan is still spoken (the name of the city in Catalan is L'Alguer), as the island was once an Aragonese colony. Catalan is more widely spoken in Catalonia, Spain.

Here's some cheerful news, if you have been looking for a way to enjoy a vacation in Europe but are worried about the cost — now Europe is on sale!

Villas and apartments, already a great value for family and friends who can stay a week or more, are an even better value now. Many villa owners are offering 10-20% discounts for bookings made and confirmed in January for stays throughout 2009. Other owners are offering a free welcome dinner, a basket of basic provisions, or other services.

In addition, the exchange rate has improved significantly in recent months, increasing your purchasing power for everything from accommodations and car rentals to food and local services.

Travel insurance is less expensive now for families, thanks to the new "kids free" insurance. And some of our best villas still have great availability. So, if you were thinking of traveling to Europe in 2009, be sure to look at our January Specials page to see the possibilities.
